About
Another factor that affects the quality of palm oil, especially in areas with newly planted oil palms, is the harvesting of the fruit bunches at the right ripeness level. The ripeness of the oil palm fruit bunches is related to the oil content in both the fruit and the shell, which affects the quantity and quality of the palm oil extracted. The oil yield per bunch can be calculated from the oil-to-bunch ratio. This ratio is influenced by various factors, such as the palm variety, cultivation practices, and harvesting, with harvesting being the most critical. Therefore, it is essential to harvest oil palm fruit bunches at the right ripeness level and according to standardized harvesting practices
level 1
Unripe bunch
Characteristics of oil palm bunch
Unripe Bunch is black or purple-black and fruit mesocarp outer layer of yellowish. These bunches have no fresh fruit socket during inspection at the refinery. Fruit socket on unripe bunch is not caused by the usual process of maturity.
level 2
Under Ripe bunch
Characteristics of oil palm bunch
Under Ripe Bunch is orange in colour and reddish or reddish-purple fruit mesocarp yellowish orange coloured outer layer. These bunches have less than ten (10) loose sockets during inspection at the refinery. Fruit bunches and loose fruits should be sent to the mill within 24 hours after harvest.
level 3
Ripe bunch
Characteristics of oil palm bunch
Ripe bunches with yellowish and reddish outer layer and its mesocarp are yellow coloured. This bunch has at least ten (10) loose sockets and more than fifty percent (50%) fruits were still attached to the bunch during inspection. Fruit bunches and loose fruits should be sent to the mill within 24 hours after harvest.
level 4
Over Ripe bunch
Characteristics of oil palm bunch
Over Ripe Bunch are bunches of fresh fruit with dark red and more than fifty (50%) fruits detached, but at least ten percent (10%) still attached to the fresh fruit bunches during the inspection at the factory. Fruit bunches and loose fruits should be sent to the mill within 24 hours after harvest.
